SAMUEL (SAM) PHILLIPS 1870 - 1955

Samuel Phillips was born January 31, 1870 in London, England. Sam, at the age of 27 in the year 1897, married Mary E. Bryant, born July 2, 1879, in Manatee County, FL. She died September 5, 1935, she was 56. Sam moved to Tampa, Florida where he died August 17, 1955. He was married twice, first to Mary and after Mary died, he married her sister Hattie.
Hattie had been previously married to a McLeod with whom she had six children: Charles McLeod, Joe McLeod (who was a sitting county commissioner in 1953), J. W. McLeod, Lottie McLeod-Durrance, Willie McLeod-Tatum, and Edna McLeod Moody.
Sam was a Forman for The Oak Knoll Grapefruit and Orange Company, managing an 80 acre grove in circa 1910. A. V. Huyler was President of the company. Sam was a [STB] Pet Farm manager circa 1920. He had eight children with Mary; William Bryan. b. 12-6-1897, d. 2-13-1975; Lillie Mae b. 1900, d. 11-23-1970; Bessie S. b. 6-24-1904; d 6-13-1989; Ethel M 1905; Harry Huyler, b. 11-26-1907, d. 8-31-1986; Samuel, Jr. 1910; John 1914; and Frank 1919. All dates of death have not been recovered at this time.

Frank & Bessie
October 14, 1917, Lillie Mae Phillips marries Benjamin Dallis Corbitt, he went by the name “Dallis.” Dallis was born in Wauchula, Florida on 04-21-1887. . In 1898 the Corbitt’s moved to the Oak Knoll area. About 1900 the family moves to Punta Gorda, Florida. Still seeking permanence, another journey was made to Fish-eating Creek, southeast of Venus, Florida. In 1905 The Corbitt’s moved back to the Oak Knoll (Now called Bethany), area about 3 ˝ miles from the Bethany Baptist Church; this is where the school was located and the children had to walk to school. Sometime between 1906 and 1910, Sam Phillips gives Dallis his first job as a fruit grove worker. Dallis died May 18, 1947 and Lillie died November 23, 1970.
There was no mention in this writing about the birth of any children to Lillie and Dallis.
Frank's Son
Harry Huyler Phillips married Bidie Elma Hendry March 28, 1928. They had six children.
Harry was the Chairman of the Building Committee for the building of the Bethany Baptist Church sanctuary that was dedicated in June of 1974. The Pastor was Rev. A. O. Hendry.
Harry died of cancer in 1986 and Bidie passed in 1998.

Compositions writen by Sam Phillips, Sr., dated October 1889 and March 1890, Sam would have been 19/20 years old at the time. It is not known why he wrote this material, I can only speculate it was writing assignments given him by his mother to improve his gramer and writing skills.
